Bicycle Panniers Tutorial

I just finished my first, in depth tutorial. Whew! It is a tutorial on how to make a pair of cute panniers for your bicycle. For those of you who've never heard of a pannier, think of saddlebags for your bicycle.

The bicycle rack pictured here is approximately 17" long by 5.5" wide, which may be larger than most rear bicycle racks. It is an Electra Cruiser alloy rear rack and can be purchased here, if you think that you would like to purchase one for your bike.

Unfortunately, if you already have a rear rack, it is probably smaller than this one. Yours may be around 14" long by 5" wide, with a sort of curved part on it. This seems to be what the generic bike rack looks like. Here are some pics of what the bags look like on one of these smaller racks.

If you have a smaller rear rack, you will probably need to tweak the pattern a little bit to fit your rack. The finished bags are each approximately 13" tall by 4" wide. The finished piece that connects the two bags to the rack measures approximately 19" long (including the flap that holds onto the curved part of the rack) by 6" wide.

Also, please note from my pictures that the bags look a little floppy. This is because I didn't use any interfacing for these bags. I suggest using a heavyweight stabilizer like Peltex #70 or something close in sturdiness. This should help prevent the bags from rubbing against the wheel as you take your pretty new bags for a spin.

Feel free to use my tutorial to create your own panniers, but please do not use my tutorial for commercial use such as making and selling the bags on Etsy or elsewhere.
