I mean, who doesn't love Peeps? And with the awesome bunny and chick tutorials over at Dandelions and Lace it's hard not to want to make a whole gaggle of Peeps. A gander of Peeps? I'm not sure what this kind of grouping of cuteness should be called.

Now to try to explain the alpaca. Where I work, we have been grouped into teams and we had to pick a team slogan and icon. We came up with some made up acronym for the word alpaca. Mostly because alpacas are so cute.

On a recent visit to my local Hancock Fabrics, I found a great deal on about a quarter of a yard of cotton candy blue colored fur that I didn't know what I was going to use it for, but I knew I had to have it.

Some tweaking to a Simplicity pattern for a giraffe bust and you've got yourself an alpaca.

But since I gave the alpaca such feminine eyelashes, I decided I needed to fully girl it up. Our team captain chose the name Pearl for her individual alpaca mascot name, so I thought I'd give this little gal some pearl earrings and some lace fringe for her mounting board.

This seemed like a good opportunity to re-enter the craft blogging world since I've been away for quite a while.

At first I thought about doing something along the Star Wars line, but that seemed a little overplayed. So in the spirit of not being overplayed, I decided that I was going to try to recreate something from a classic 80's movie, "Stripes".

I assume I will probably be the only one trying to recreate the EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle in all its softie glory.

Here was my inspiration.

And here is what I came up with.

But just having the EM 50 didn't quite feel right, so I created softie versions of Bill Murray and Harold Ramis.

Here was my inspiration for my Harold Ramis softie.

And here he is.

And here was my Bill Murray inspiration.

And finally, I took a little liberty with the Bill Murray softie with the fabric I had on hand. I think I like his hair the best.

Taking a cue from the oh so subtle color scheme of the helmet, I thought that this pink polka dotted duck cloth with cupcakes all over it would be a perfect compliment to our usual unusual biker garb.
I started with the theory that I would add a strap to the back so that I could sling it across my torso and carry it basically on my back. I added a small pocket so that I could hide the strap if necessary.
After trying it on, I decided I might need another carrying option, so I added some side straps and I jazzed them up a little by trying out a star stitch on my Brother sewing machine. These straps were just some white twill tape type ribbon I had in my stash.

We went for a ride tonight and I used it a few times. I think it turned out very nice. I'm most surprised that it actually fits my helmet perfectly. I'm mostly surprised because I basically winged it and made up my own pattern for it. I even had to tweak the zipper since it was a dual separating parka zipper, so I had to remove the second zipper and hand stitch up the closure on it so that the zipper wouldn't come flying off. I think I'm most entertained by the anti-biker image that only cupcakes can truly portray.

Today was the Scott AFB craft show. I didn't really know what to expect, either from the number of customers or the number of fellow crafters. That being said, I should not have disappointed by both numbers, yet I was. Including myself, there were probably 15 fellow crafters trying to peddle their wares. I think estimating that many customers would be erring on the overly optimistic side.

It may have been the fact that when we opened it was raining a little outside. I may have also been the fact that halfway through the allotted craft show time frame it had stopped raining and had become a beautiful spring day with temperatures around the high 50s. It may also have been the fact that there wasn't even a sign out in front of the building telling people that there was a craft show happening inside.

I realized going into this that there probably wouldn't be too many customers because the only people who would be able to get to the craft show would be those individuals who had access to the base itself. I did, however, expect there to be more than a dozen show up in the 6 hours that the show was being held.

With that being said, here are the newbie lessons (in no particular order) that I picked up today that may help those of you who are preparing for your first craft show.

1. Bring something to do. Whether it is something crafty, like knitting or crocheting, or just a couple of magazines and a half finished sudoku book like I had, bring something to the party.

2. Be prepared for bad lighting. We were told beforehand that we might need a lamp and extension cord because the lighting wasn't that great in the hall where the show was being held. Thankfully we didn't need it, but I can see how some areas of the hall would benefit from some fresh light bulbs.

3. Be early. The early bird theory applies here, especially if you want a spot along the wall where you can access power outlets for your electronics or perhaps your extra lighting. We were maybe half an hour late for the initial setup time and all the wall positions had already been taken.

4. Location, location, location. Logically speaking, the spots that are probably the best are right near the door. Of course, if it is cold out and the door is going to be propped open, like it was this morning, you probably don't want to be right where you're going to freeze.

5. Customers move like rats in a maze. Millions of dollars are spent every year by major retail companies in research to determine how customers move throughout their stores. The layout today was an oval racetrack of sorts and everyone that I saw walk into the area moved in a counter clockwise fashion. Most of the customers began their shopping with the exterior tables at their immediate right. Some pinballed back and forth down the racetrack, moving from exterior to interior. Others made a loop and looked at the exterior tables, then made another loop and checked out the interior tables. If you consider how you shop in a grocery store, you probably move around the exterior first and then move into the interior. If you are setup in a craft show that has an interior made up of multiple rows, you may want to try to get a spot on the exterior, close to the entrance. I know that's how I tend to shop when I go to craft shows. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and don't even make it down each interior row because I get tired or perhaps something about the show disagrees with me and I lose interest.

6. Good incidentals to bring with you: duct tape, scotch tape, mirror (especially if you are selling items like jewelry that customers may want to actually see what they look like on them), clothes pins, larger clamps (perhaps to hold down your table covering), measuring tape (in case of an impromptu customer order), scissors, notepad, pens, paper, business cards, calculator, chair seat cushion (for those uncomfortable meeting room chairs that are usually provided), extension cord, and lighting (spare floor lamp).

7. Finally, don't expect to win the lottery. I didn't make a single sale today. I did, however, swap one of my purses for a beautifully needle felted pillow of a cherry blossom branch. That same lovely young lady that made the pillow gave me some great information about a local craft guild and her excitement over getting a new handmade purse was actually better than getting paid because I know that she truly understands the kind of work that went into making that purse. Hopefully I helped her with her Etsy seller questions, but even if I didn't, I know I gave her some good tips about local craft places she could visit.

I came close to an actual sale, which actually ended in swapping some more good crafting information with a customer. She really made me feel good about the quality of my work, which I'm sure many of us sometimes have issues with. I know there are many times that I feel like one or two slightly skewed stitches have somehow degraded the overall quality of my work, but she really made me feel reassured about what little skills I may actually have.

Overall, the show could have been advertised better and more customers could have shown up for it, but I feel like it was well worth my entrance fee and waking up early on a Saturday morning for the quality social interactions I was able to have. The beautiful weather and the motorcycle ride after the show didn't hurt my mood either. All in all, a pretty great Saturday.Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11765710548078718990noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-827850099771629528.post-30426387173564662013-03-08T10:20:00.002-06:002013-03-08T10:20:15.538-06:00Scott AFB Spring Craft FairIn an effort to keep what few fans I have informed, I thought I would let you guys know that I will be setting up a table at the Scott Air Force Base Spring Craft Fair tomorrow (Saturday, 9 March). The hours for the craft fair will be 10 AM until 4 PM.

So if you are able to get on base (you need to have a pass of some kind, either a permanent pass like an ID card or a temporary pass, perhaps from a military friend you may have) make sure to stop by Rockwell Hall and check out all the fabulously crafty things that the Scott AFB community is making and selling.Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11765710548078718990noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-827850099771629528.post-57516953970077324692013-03-03T14:35:00.000-06:002013-03-08T10:23:32.927-06:00Zipper Repair OptionThe other day, one of my coworkers reminded me that I hadn't posted on my blog for a while. So when I ran into issues with the zipper on a denim jacket that I'm currently making, I thought it was the perfect opportunity for a blog post. This one's for you Pat.

The denim jacket that I'm making is based on pattern number 7582 by Burda Style.I thought that a denim motorcycle jacket would be cute using this pattern. I really liked the zippers on the sleeves. So I bought 3 yards of denim and a cute print of cotton for the lining and started working on the jacket. As I worked, I decided to leave the zippers off of the sleeves to save myself some zipper pain. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.

I started sewing the jacket and waited to look for the zipper in my HUGE zipper stash because, as a fool, I assumed that I had one. I only have probably 300+ zippers in my stash. Surely I must have a 24" denim separating zipper. Well...not so much. That was fine, I was hoping to find a longer zipper to use anyway, so I went to the store and found that 24" is apparently the largest they make denim separating zippers. That was fine too, so I bought it and brought it home.

So now I have a day off, zipper at the ready and I'm ready to move forward with my new spring jacket. I put the zipper in according to the instructions. I even double checked on the picture of the zipper placement. Every time I put a zipper in, I usually triple check it just to make sure because there's nothing more discouraging than going through all the work of putting it in, only to find that you've put it in backward or some ridiculous thing like that.

Which is exactly what I did. I suppose I should be happy that I didn't put it in upside down, but just looking at the jacket and realizing that if I wanted to use the zipper as I had put it in, I would have to zip it up from the inside was more than a little frustrating. So my options became either rip it out and start all over again, or try to find a solution. Somehow trying to tear off the small brass stop on the pull side of the zipper sounded like a better option than tearing the entire zipper out. Afterall, worst case scenario was going to be that I would have to start all over with the zipper anyway, and at least this way I would get to try to cause some kind of physical destruction to the zipper that had ruined my morning of sewing.

So I went to work at the brass stop with a pair of my jewelry pliers, thinking that it would come off easily. Not so much. After about 5 minutes of plier fueled frustration I decided that I would just cut out the brass stop and try to flip the zipper pull around and see if it would work that way. I ended up having to cut the first zipper tooth off in order to get the brass stop off, but I got it off.

Moment of truth time now. I slid the zipper pull off, flipped it around so that I could zip it up from the outside of the jacket, and gave it a try. At this point I'm just assuming that it's not going to work and that I'm going to have to start all over again. Apparently the sewing gods felt that I had suffered enough and I found that it actually worked. Major note to self here, if you flip the zipper pull around, it will still work. Now all I had to deal with was the huge chunk of zipper area that I had to originally cut out.

I looked at my jewelry pliers and thought "don't I have some crimp beads somewhere?". I thought that I had some brass colored ones, but after a quick recon mission of the craft/junk room they were no where to be found. I did, however, locate some silver ones that were just going to have to do. I crimped a few of them to try to hide the missing chunk and then added a couple to the other side of the zipper to make it look like I had meant to do that. Fortunately the brass zipper stop on the other side was still fully in tact, so the zipper still stops like a champ even if it does look a little wonky.
At what point is it ok to say that the level of frustration with a project has exceeded the guilt associated with the level of commitment you've made to that project? I may be getting close with this jacket.
I wanted it to be smaller than a real bowling bag, but I don't think I sized it down quite far enough. It's a nice size and much smaller than the original pattern that I tweaked it from, but if I decide to try to resuscitate it one day I'm going to size it down a few more inches. If I would have stayed with the original pattern size it would have looked more like luggage than a purse.

I chose to use some beautiful baby blue vinyl that has a leather feel to it for the upper portion of the purse and a cream colored vinyl for the lower part and the handles. The lining is a sort of grey high pile upholstery fabric that I got on sale.
I really like the natural almost hemp looking piping that I chose. I didn't want to go too bright and shiny with the bag like some of the vintage bowling bags are, so I chose the piping to try to tone it down a bit. Maybe I'll make the next version blingy overkill with some metallic flake red vinyl. Hmmm....
I had to hand stitch the lining to the exterior at both ends of the zipper, so some of the stitching in those areas may look a little less than perfect. I added heavy interfacing (Pellon 926 I believe) to the lining and then also added some plastic canvas material in between the lining and exterior layers to give the bag even more structure. This, unfortunately, necessitated me having to try to stitch the lining to the zipper that I had already installed in the exterior. This would have been an easier proposal if the bag would have worked with me and my sewing machine, but all that interfacing and plastic canvas pretty much nixed that idea.
Do you like my little zipper pull and interior key holders? Can you tell what they are? They're some extra closures that are usually used on women's garters that I had lying around. I looked at them and thought, "That would make a cute and quirky little addition that not everyone would readily recognize". I even went so far as to sew the little plastic male part of the closure onto my keyring so that I can easily clip my keys to either the inside or outside holders.
I thought it would be fitting to show you the jacket that I made her as well.

Since I knew that she would probably be saddened by the sudden change in her living situation and she would most likely be much chillier since she had moved to Wisconsin, I thought a nice fleece jacket would be a good winter gift. When I saw this paisley print, it spoke to me and what it said was "Dorothy".

The pattern for her jacket was the same one I used to make a similar fleece jacket for my mom (pics to come, someday) so I felt comfortable that I knew what I was doing. That, unfortunately, was my first mistake. One of many.

Apparently in my overconfidence, sewed the upper front parts of the jacket to the wrong lower front parts. This I didn't realize until I tried to put the sleeves in. I assumed that I had sewn something else on incorrectly, so I ripped out the stitching from the front to the back and sewed it all back together in what I thought was the correct configuration. It wasn't until I went to put the zipper in that I realized my true mistake. By then it was too late to tear it all apart, so instead of a zipper, I improvised with some bias tape button holes and some custom covered buttons that matched the blue fleece lining.

I don't know how much traveling Dorothy will do while up in Wisconsin, so I assumed that she would probably use this jacket to stay warm in her living areas rather than use it to try to face the cold outdoors. I considered the fact that she may be living with neighbors who may mistake some of her items for their own, so I chose to give her a hand embroidered monogram so that she will always know that this jacket is hers.

I hope you all enjoy it as much as she has.
I may have given her something way back when, but I felt guilty that I have been making things for other people and that I had neglected to make her anything. That being said, I decided to find out what she would like in a handmade, one of a kind purse. After basically being left to my own devices with only the requirement of several pockets and a keychain holder, I went to work searching my sizable fabric stash for some Dorothy-worthy fabric. The following purse is what I came up with.
The large shoulder strap is actually a recycled belt and the smaller white handles are recycled yokes from the hubby's suspenders that he wore at our wedding. I thought the butterfly and floral print screamed Dorothy. She seemed to really enjoy it as well. So much so that one of her only remaining family members commissioned another purse to give to her for Christmas. I just finished it and it will be in the mail today. Here it is.
It came out a little more Barbie than I initially intended but I think she will still enjoy it. It's a sort of french print for the main part of the bag. I found this fabulous bedazzled chiffon remnant and I just had to use it on something, so that is what is on the outer part of the exterior pockets. The interior of the pockets are lined in the same grey canvas material as the handles. The interior of the purse itself is a sort of tweed grey that I thought might help tone down the pink on the exterior. It doesn't have the plethora of pockets on the inside like her first purse but maybe she can take this special occasions like bingo so that she can carry back all of her winnings.
The class was taught by Ruth Leech.

I was a little afraid that he wouldn't have a good time during the class, but it involved playing with metal, tools and a small torch, so he had a great time. I did too, though the torch was a bit intimidating, even if it was a small torch. We used the torch to solder a decorative bezel onto a silver blank so that we could frame a cabochon onto it. It doesn't sound very involved, but there is a lot of precision and patience required. Especially when you're trying to get the little bits of solder to stay still when you're trying to melt it with the torch. I think we both did pretty good though. First is my cabochon, which has a girlier bezel on it. Apparently girlier doesn't mean easier to work with because those fine little designs on the bezel were kind of a pain to get lined up.
I've been busy at work and working on projects such as my fantastic new fleece jacket that I recently finished.

Everyone seems to be making those fleece no sew tie blankets lately. There is nothing wrong with these blankets, but I just don't have the patience for them. When I saw this fleece material, my first thought, instead of a blanket, was to make it into a pea or trench style jacket. It reminded me of burberry print with the large plaids on it. I could have gone with a black liner, but I thought the dark grey felt a little less formal and a lot more fun.
I especially love the buttons. I added the little tab on the back for looks. I don't necessarily like a belt, but I like the idea of a belt so I thought this little bit on the back would work for that.
Like my purses, I had to add extra pockets since I seem to love pockets. Each side has an exterior pocket lined in grey and an interior welt sort of pocket, also lined in grey.
I may still tweak the sleeves a little, since they're bigger than I would like, but other than that, I LOVE this jacket. It's fabulously warm and other than the frustration I had with matching up the plaids, the pattern was a breeze to use.

I promise I will post more of my latest projects. In fact, the hubby and I just got done taking a silversmithing class tonight, so I am anxious to share my creation with all of you.
I made a bunch of these socks for myself and my mother last year based on a free online pattern provided by Studio Cherie on Sew Mama Sew.

Unfortunately my mother and I both found that our feet were apparently wider than normal people's since the fleece felt tight around the top of our ankles. So I decided that I was going to try to use her pattern as a beginning spot and tweak it to fit our big footed needs.

This tutorial is what I came up with. It provides a little more wiggle room around the ankles, and the toes are more universal than the original pattern called for. I also added options to choose various sizes from women's size 6 all the way up to women's size 11 (I have HUGE feet).

Here is a link to a video on how to pin the pieces of the socks together, just in case you need help with that part.

I hope you all enjoy this pattern and use it to make your own super warm, super comfy fleece socks to use this winter.
Ironically, we don't really decorate for Christmas, but I began making these stockings based on a request from a friend of mine. She likes vintage style materials and wanted me to make them with any vintage fabric that I had on hand. She also wanted them to be monogrammed with "mom", "dad", "grandma", and her daughter's name. It seemed like a win-win situation to me. I get to use up some of my cool vintage fabric in my ever expanding fabric stash, and she gets some handmade heirloom Christmas decorations that I hope she and her family will enjoy for many years to come.

Since I have pretty much zero Christmas material in my stash, I got the approval from her to use whatever material I thought was fitting. These are what I came up with.

For "Dad", he got a tweed-type wool material with a super furry grey cuff. His stocking is lined in a black velour-type material.
Finally, for the little one, or "June". She got what I believe is a polyester type of material with this very 80's looking plaid print in pink, white, orange, yellow and tans. This seemed in keeping with a little girl, so that's what drew me to it. Her cuff is this ridiculously furry/hairy kind of material. It kind of went everywhere when I was trying to sew and cut it, but the end look was worth it. Her stocking is lined in just a plain white cotton.
In addition to these Christmas stockings, I also made 3 vintage style one's that I put on my Etsy page. You can see them here.

I will have to package up these sweet Christmas stockings and get them in the mail soon. I will also have to add the cutest pair of little baby booties that I made for June in that package. Here's a few pics of those adorable little shoes.
Couldn't you just die from cuteness!?! I almost don't want to send them because they're too much fun to put on your fingers and play with. Perhaps I will make some more and share them with you all.

On to my next project.

I was busy traveling 5,227 miles...and getting married. I'll post more about the big day later. Right now I wanted to share my latest purse creation with you all.

Following the idea of my motorcycle inspired vest upgrade, I thought I should have a purse to go with that vest. During our 5,000+ mile trip out west, we stopped at several Harley Davidson motorcycle dealerships to pick up poker chips in memory of our trip. While we were at these dealerships, I perused the women's clothing and accessories sections and I saw several, very expensive purses that I thought were cute in their construction, but not in their price tags. So I thought I could try to recreate the essence of these purses.

I used the same template that I used on the lace insert of my vest to create a burlesque type of orange and fishnet inset zippered pocket. Here are some closeup shots of the pocket section.

I began by copying the bar and shield design onto the wrong side of the denim material, similar to the way I made my lace vest insert. I then sandwiched this denim layer on top of another denim layer, right sides facing, and stitched around the design. When I was done, I began clipping away the interior of the bar and shield design. Some of the corners are pretty tight and I found that if you clip as close as possible to the stitched line, it makes turning the project much easier.

Next I basically turned the layers so that the right sides were now on the outside. I basically took the theory behind inserting a zippered pocket and changed the shape a bit. I pinned down the border of the open section and used some orange accent thread to stitch around the bar and shield design and to help it hold its shape. All that was left was to put the denim layer on top of my orange zipper section.

The orange layer of the zipper section consists of about 4 separate layers of orange tulle material and the fishnet layer is actually two layers of black fishnet type material. I also added a layer of white cotton underneath the orange layer to help the orange color pop a little more. When I had it sufficiently lined up, I restitched over my original orange stitching line to secure the zipper section to the denim layer. I also used another layer of the same white cotton to complete the other side of the pocket, but I stitched this layer to the external border of the entire purse front so that the pocket itself would be the size of the entire purse front.

For the handle tabs, I simply sandwiched them in between the back denim layer and the zipper/lining layers. I made sure to measure the distance between two of my belt loops on my jeans and placed the handle tabs accordingly. You'll see in the pictures later why I placed them so specifically.

For the removable handle, I had a sort of gaudy looking chain necklace that my mother gave me from one of her many garage sale adventures that I thought would be perfect since it was sort of a mixture of orange and black links. I simply removed a couple of links to open up the chain, then I added a couple of decorative washer links on each end of the chain so that it would be easier to add/remove them from the little clasps that I had put on the handle tabs.
Here you can see why I measured the handle tabs so that they would line up with the belt loops of my jeans. Now when I ride on the back of the bike I can have my purse handy instead of always having to stow it in one of the saddle bags. This pic also shows my little zipper pulls nicely too. I thought the little motorcycle one was fitting for this application.

When I'm not using my chain shoulder strap, I can stow it securely away in my little orange zippered pocket.

And the cap on the whole purse is the lining. I had bought this black skull material from Wal-mart ages ago and it's been in my fabric stash collecting dust ever since. Did I mention it had glitter on it? Maybe that's why it was collecting so much dust. Not much use for glittery skull material. Anyway, I thought that this would be as good an application for the skully material as any. The nice part is that the glitter doesn't appear to come off on everything, like I was assuming it would. I added two pockets, one on each side, to separate my wallet and phone and anything else I might need with me when I get to go out on a spontaneous bike ride with my new husband.
My sewing machine did fight me a little bit on this purse, especially since it was going through about 4 layers of denim and a couple layers of interfacing in a few spots. Sounds like a good excuse to find a new machine. Hmm....

I had some purple, cotton jersey knit material that has been sitting in my stash for quite a while and I figured it was about time to do something with it. So here is what I came up with.

I used a cream colored zipper on the back to add some interest and also because it was one of the few zippers of that length that I had in my zipper stash and I didn't want to have to go out and buy anything for this stash busting project. I really like the neckline on it. It's very 60s chic. The best part is that because it is jersey knit, it's really comfortable to wear. Now I just need an excuse to wear it somewhere.

How could I pass that offer up? When I returned, I found one of those spinning spice rack storage containers. You know, the ones that have 47 little glass bottles of spices that you maybe only ever use 3 of when you cook? This container, thankfully, had a bag full of empty glass containers just begging to be used in my sewing area. I was more than happy to oblige and I brought them home.

Unfortunately when I got it home and began taking the glass containers out of the bag, I found that there were actually 5 containers missing. That was alright though, I found a solution to fix that. I just put my most commonly used large spools of thread in those spaces.

As you can see from the last picture, my handy little sewing basket fits on top of the spice rack perfectly. Perfectly as long as I don't spin it like I'm on the Price is Right, that is.

I especially like the little chalkboard contact paper labels I put on each little container so that I don't have to guess what is in each little bottle. While I was making these little labels, I kept looking over at my sewing tackle box and I decided to add some labels to it as well.

It's a little obsessive, I realize, but it somehow makes me want to sew more now that I can easily find stuff. And that's kind of the whole point of organizing your crafting area, isn't it?
Yes, I fully realize that garage is not a verb....that is, it is not a verb to those people who do not partake in the sometimes full contact sport of going to garage sales. I remember hearing garaging war stories from my mother about how I was going to garage sales while I was still in the womb. That is how deeply rooted garaging is for me. That being said, I've been slacking since I left home so long ago. Especially this summer with the ridiculous temperatures that we've had. I just couldn't bring myself to drag myself from sale to sale in triple digit temps. It was beautifully mild out this morning and there just so happened to be a large annual sale at a local church, so I gave in to my garaging nature and went to see what they had. I've found that sales where they are held in a large building, like a church or a school, seem to have the best selections. It's like going to the equivalent of 5 sales in one fail swoop.

I was lucky enough to find a sweet deal on a cross stitch lap stand ($2) and an even sweeter deal on a breadmaker ($5). The breadmaker was the exact same brand and style as the one we have at home, so I figured that even if it didn't work, at least I would be able to get a replacement mixer basket and little mixing paddle out of the deal.

Luckily, the breadmaker works like a champ! It actually looks cleaner than our other one, so I think my mom might be receiving our old one very soon.

It runs along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, and we figure that it will be a nice honeymoon idea.

In anticipation of this biker journey/honeymoon, I felt that I needed a little something extra for my wardrobe. Earlier this summer, I had found a very nice Eddie Bauer denim vest at a garage sale for about $1. I picked it up with this very upgrade in mind.

I printed out the general outline of a popular motorcycle company's logo in a size that would fit nicely on the back of the vest. Then I used my handy little chalk pen to transfer the logo onto the vest. I just outlined the logo with the chalk pen, then I flipped the logo (chalk side down) onto the vest where I wanted it and rubbed the back of the paper to transfer the chalk. I then went over the few spots that didn't transfer completely.

Next I cut out a large piece of lace that my mom gave me and pinned it to the inside of the vest, making sure that it covered the entire logo area. (These pictures are from after I had already sewn it, which is why you don't see any pins.)

Then I used white thread and basically sewed over the logo, making sure to go through the lace. I kept checking the lace underneath so that I didn't accidentally fold some extra lace over. I tend to do that a lot when I try to sew too quickly. Once I made sure that the logo had been sewn properly, I VERY carefully snipped the center of the logo, making sure not to cut the lace.

From there, I VERY, VERY carefully snipped the inner denim part of the logo so that the lace was exposed. If you try this at home, remember that patience is a virtue and it will be rewarded.

Finally, I trimmed the excess lace on the inside of the vest, and voila! Very honeymoon if I do say so myself.

This one is courtesy of the Plano Molding Outlet store in Plano, Illinois where I was able to find this tackle storage box for about $15, if I remember correctly. That is at least half of what one of these storage boxes would cost in a retail store. As soon as I saw it, I knew that I could use it to organize all of the little bits and pieces that would otherwise be strewn about my sewing desk haphazardly.

Now I realize that it's not that pretty to look at, but it definitely makes up for its lackluster appearance in functionality. You can really tell from the pictures, but on the very top of the lid, where the darker colored areas are, there are two small storage areas where I like to keep all of my magnetic purse closures and keychain clasps. Very handy.

Lift the lid and there is deep storage where I like to keep my commonly used thread spools and my pincushions.

When you lift open the very front of the container, there are four drawers with a plethora of storage areas for all kinds of small items. I like to keep my extra bobbins, thimbles and other various sewing bits and pieces in the top drawer.

The second drawer is where I concentrate all of my different sewing feet attachments. In the center, I used small jewelry boxes to contain similar feet that I had multiples of, such as zipper feet.

The wide containment area of the third drawer is perfect for all of my extra machine and sewing needles.

Finally, the fourth drawer houses more of my sewing machine needles, my handy chalk pen and chalk refills, various pens and pencils and smaller spools of thread that conveniently fit into the long, small spaces.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing my uncommon organization solution for my sewing area and I hope it inspires you to take a second look at storage solutions that you might have never considered before.

This one happens to be one of my favorites.

Now I know what you're thinking. A box of chocolates may seem like a natural sewing area requirement, but that is not what this is. Well....it used to be a box of chocolates, but that was quite a long time ago.

Now it is my fantastic bobbin storage box. I am able to keep several bobbins of the same color thread conveniently together in one of the former chocolate heart nesting spots.

It doesn't hurt that sometimes I look at it and think, "Oooo, chocolates".
I wasn't entirely pleased with the location that I had chosen for the keychain holder, so I decided that I would make a second attempt at the pattern.

This time I went with a solid print material that I had gotten from Garden Ridge a while back. To spruce it up a little bit, I transferred the pattern of a sweet little bicycle and flowers onto the front of the bag and hand embroidered the pattern. I made sure to place the keychain holder a little off center so that it wouldn't interfere with the magnetic closure this time. I was also able to find a slightly larger keychain holder clasp that luckily matched the accent color of the lining fabric.

I hope that my friend likes this version of the purse as much as I liked making it for her.
I told her I would definitely give it a shot.

She wanted a relatively small, rectangular shaped purse with a large strap so that she could wear the purse across her body. She also wanted a key holder, an exterior pocket and a few interior pockets.

After consulting my rather substantial collection of purse patterns (thank you Jo Ann Fabric for having so many $0.99 pattern sales), I settled on Simplicity's pattern number 2911.

The hipster purse in the set of patterns seemed like it would be a perfect choice. It is almost exactly the same size as her original purse, so I thought that it would be a good starting point.

The only changes that I really had to make to the pattern was to add an additional internal pocket (the original pattern only had one internal pocket) and to add zippers to the external pocket and another zipper to one of the internal pockets. And I also added a key holder, although when I added the key holder, I centered it on the purse, which actually put it almost in the way of the magnetic closure.

I'll still offer her this purse, but I decided that I could make a better version for her. Unfortunately, you'll have to check out my next post to see my upgrade.

In the mean time, I'll let you see the finished product of my Simplicity 2911 purse. The 1.0 version anyway.
